IT MANAGER

We are an oil and natural gas exploration and production company with operations focused in Central and Northern Alberta. We are actively growing, both through the development of our current asset base and through the potential acquisition of additional properties in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Hawthorne Energy LLC operates in Canada through our wholly-owned subsidiary HWN Energy, Ltd.

HWN Energy, Ltd. is currently seeking to fill the following position:

Job Title: IT Manager

Location: Calgary

Reports to: Senior Human Resources Manager

The IT Manager will oversee all aspects of the company’s IT operations, including but not limited to cybersecurity, infrastructure management, cost optimization, help desk support, and field IT services. The ideal candidate will bring a combination of technical expertise in IT systems and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by the oil and gas sector. This position is a working manager role that requires leadership skills, strategic planning, and a proactive approach to IT management in conjunction with a third party provider.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, maintain, and audit robust cybersecurity protocols, including conducting regular vulnerability assessments and risk analyses to protect company data and infrastructure
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal security policies.
  • Oversee the management of security tools and optimize the company’s IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, cloud services, and databases, to safeguard sensitive information and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Ensure high availability, reliability, and scalability of IT systems and services to meet operational demands.
  • Oversee hardware and software lifecycle management, ensuring timely updates, upgrades, and replacements.
  • Develop and manage the IT budget, evaluate technology investments, and monitor spending to recommend cost-effective solutions and provide regular insights on cost optimization to senior leadership.
  • Lead and manage the help desk team to provide timely, effective IT support for internal users.
  • Implement and refine ITIL-based processes for incident, problem, and change management.
  • Ensure that technical issues are resolved efficiently and user satisfaction is maintained at a high level.
  • Provide IT support to field operations, ensuring reliable connectivity, hardware/software functionality, and effective troubleshooting to resolve challenges and enable smooth operations at remote locations and active work sites in Alberta.
  • Develop and implement IT policies and procedures to streamline operations.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer-centric service.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project management teams to align IT infrastructure with business goals, ensuring systems support the company’s sustainability and growth objectives.
  • Assist in the implementation of new technologies that improve productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Travel to remote oil & gas facilities will be required

Desired Skills and Experience:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field. Relevant certifications (CISSP, CISM, ITIL, etc.) preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of IT experience, with at least 3 years in a management or leadership role.
  • Extensive experience in cybersecurity, network infrastructure, and IT operations, preferably within the oil and gas industry.
  • Strong knowledge of field operations and remote IT support in challenging environments.
  • Proven experience in cost management and budgeting for IT departments.

Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of network security, cloud infrastructure, and IT architecture.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting hardware and software issues in a remote oil & gas facility environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal stakeholders and external vendors.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with remote teams in the oil and gas or energy sectors.
  • Hands-on knowledge of industrial control systems (ICS) and SCADA systems.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance in the energy sector.
