Lead Operator

We are an oil and natural gas exploration and production company with operations focused in Central and Northern Alberta. We are actively growing, both through the development of our current asset base and through the acquisition of additional properties in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Hawthorne Energy LLC operates in Canada through our wholly-owned subsidiary HWN Energy, Ltd.

HWN Energy, Ltd. is currently seeking to fill the following position:

Job Title: Lead Operator

Location: Grande Prairie, AB

Lead Operators provide training and mentorship of less experienced operators in order for each area to show that all core competencies are being addressed in a safe and efficient manner. This position is responsible for ensuring area operators are progressing through the CMDS Safety program and are expected to handle other field duties as required to assist the area foreman. These duties may include smaller project supervision, line crossings and ground disturbance, new well commissioning, volume variances, etc. Position requires that Leads will spend 90% of their time in the field.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership for field production operations for HWN properties. Ongoing goal of optimization of producing wells – facilities to maximize production and lower operating costs.
  • Provide daily mentorship to junior team members with a clear display towards operational and safety excellence as well as environmental responsibility;
  • Provide hands-on CMDS training to new and junior team members and ensure all are competent and signed off on standard operating procedures before performing the tasks alone. Feed this information into the CMDS administrator;
  • Provide local supervision of projects
  • Assist with Management of Change Requests (MOC);
  • Support and participate in monthly safety meetings;
  • Conduct HID’s on all HWN sites and audits on 3rd party contractors;
  • Ensure that all operators’ activities are conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manor for HWN field properties including daily production reporting.
  • Ensure operations meet and are conducted within AER and WCB regulatory requirements and all lease and facilities met or exceeded required standards.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance and operation of surface pumping equipment and facilities to plan, execute and bring wells on stream in the timeliest and economic manner.
  • Ensure dealings with contractors and joint venture partners are handled in a professional, ethical, and effective manner ensuring contractor & service work is conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner and that field work is consistent with HWN’s HS&E requirements.
  • Assist with budget process for operating capital and operating costs and working within defined budgets.
  • Plan/Cover Vacation during the year.

 Schedule shifts to ensure we have adequate manpower coverage on a day-to-day basis. – Cover calls after hours for operational and emergency issues.

  • Other tasks that may be assigned to you by the Field Superintendent or the Vice President Production.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 7 year’s operation experience and completion of a General Educational Development (grade 12) is required. GPO A-D or PFO A-D (previously Solis 1, 2, 3) or a Trades ticket or Tech diploma is also preferred.
  • Internal candidates must currently be an Operator 1 and have completed all CMDS requirements for the Operator 1 level. External candidates would ideally have Lead Operator experience in a similar work environment;
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license;
  • Good understanding of regulatory compliance requirements and past leadership experience is ideal;
  • Proven safety track record with consecutive years of strong performance and known for leading by example;
  • Must be a good communicator with the ability to train others;
  • Developed computer skills; including Excel, Word, Outlook; and – Strong organizational and team skills
  • Confidence, ambition, and a robust sense of initiative in being a reliable self-starter
