ARO Coordinator

We are an oil and natural gas exploration and production company with operations focused in Central and Northern Alberta. We are actively growing, both through the development of our current asset base and through the acquisition of additional properties in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Hawthorne Energy LLC operates in Canada through our wholly-owned subsidiary HWN Energy, Ltd.

HWN Energy, Ltd. is currently seeking to fill the following position:

Job Title: ARO Coordinator (Asset Retirement)

Location: Calgary

HWN has an excellent opportunity for an ARO Coordinator with flexibility around full time employment or a contractor/consultant agreement.  The role will report to the VP Drilling and Completions.  The candidate will be responsible for planning and completing liability reduction projects, focusing on the “end of life” phase within the wellbore life cycle.  The ARO Coordinator will work closely with a 3rd party services provider to execute the work.  This role is based in Calgary with expectations to travel to field locations as needed.  The position requires knowledge and experience with facilities construction, pipeline decommissioning, downhole and completions work, and the reclamation process.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Building and executing yearly plans to reduce liability within the organization, working within a required ARO closure spend budget.
  • Effectively reduce inactive liability will be the main focus.  Either through asset retirement or through reactivation, the candidate should be capable of making solid recommendations on a path forward.
  • Manage the company’s inactive well list and ensuring that actions are completed within time critical deadlines.  This can involve delivering wells through the abandonment process or working with the production engineers on reactivation efforts.
  • Continue to refine the company’s RTA (request to abandon) process and ensure that proper justification / signatures are in place for each well abandonment. 
  • AFE generation and cost reporting/forecasting is a critical task.  Attention to detail is required.
  • Understand the reclamation process is a requirement to ensure that surface leases can be delivered to fast-track efforts on reducing our footprint.
  • Collaborate with various functions to abandon and suspend pipelines or facilities to lower property taxes, effectively setting surface leases up for the reclamation phase.
  • Ensure compliance on all wells that have a surface casing vent flow (SCVF).  This will include tracking and measuring required testing frequencies, as well as working with experts on SCVF repairs.
  • Ensure compliance on suspended wells and pipelines with a focus on maintain directive 13 requirements.  This will also include tracking and scheduling well inspections.
  • Reviewing A&D opportunities and assessing liabilities with said opportunities is part of the role.
  • Other responsibilities may involve partner abandonments, preparing monthly status reports, and networking to understand emerging technology that could be utilized in the company’s liability reduction efforts.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • A professional engineer registered with APEGA is preferred.  Technologists and PMPs will also be considered.
  • 5+ years experience with downhole workovers, facilities, construction or production engineering.
  • Understanding of key AER directives, including Directives 13 and 20.
  • Project management experience and training would be considered an asset.
  • A good understanding of general oilfield practices is required.  Familiar with oil and gas facilities, infrastructure, pipelines, and artificial lift systems would be an asset
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks is required
  • Strong organization and analytical skills
  • Goal-oriented and capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Experience with MS Office 365 including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is recommended
  • Experience with Petrosite, Wellview, Geoscout, and maintenance management systems is required.
  • Looking for someone with strong attention to detail and the ability to clearly back up their work
  • Must be legally permitted to work in Canada.
  • Must have a class 5 drivers license with a clean record.  A drivers abstract will be required.
